Psychiatrists who treat children are often called child psychiatrists.

Child mental health problems include developmental issues, child abuse, autism spectrum disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), psychological factors affecting medical conditions, and adjustment to life-changing events

Canadian child psychiatrists provide care for children with psychiatric diagnoses or neurodevelopmental disabilities within general hospitals or community settings such as schools and child development centres. They also offer assessments for various concerns including behavioural issues, academic difficulties, social skillsdeficits, attachment issues, child abuse, child neglect and mental health problems

Child psychiatrists are often consulted for advice or to treat children with various psychiatric or neurodevelopmental challenges that may manifest as child behavioural disorders (e.g., oppositional defiant disorder), child anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized anxiety disorder) child mood disorders (e.g., depression), child ADHD or child autism spectrum disorder difficulties (i.e., Asperger syndrome).

A pediatrician who has undertaken training is also able to assess children for these concerns; however, a child psychiatrist is better trained to provide the appropriate treatment for child mental health concerns such as medications or harm reduction techniques if required by the assessment or diagnosis."&gt
