Typical antipsychotic meditation list- A better antipsychotic medication

antipsychotic antipsychotic

Typical antipsychotics are also known as first generation antipsychotics (developed first in 1950s). This method is rarely used for the treatment of psychotic symptoms like prochlorperazine. There are second generation antipsychotics, which are referred to as atypical antipsychotics. The second generation actually replaces the first generation in certain factors. Typical antisychotics are also used for the treatment of agitations, acute mania etc.

Traditional antipsychotics are classified into two- high potential (includes haloperidol etc) and low potential (includes chlorpromazine). Both the low and high potential antipsychotics have got side effects. The rate of EPS in high potency typical antipsychotics is larger when compared to that of the low potency. Most of the patients refuse to take medicines. In this case, depot injections are given to patients. This is not always practically possible as the physician who is treating has a limited choice. So it is always recommended to have oral medications.

Depending upon the class of the medication used, side effects may vary. Some of the common side effects are: dry mouth, muscle cramping, ESP etc. For the treatment of EPS, anticholinergics are mostly preferred. Typical antipsychotic medication lists include: Trifluoperazine, Haloperidol, Fluphenazine etc.

Some of the atypical antipsychotics which are being used up are: clozapine, olanzapine, risperidone etc. Now a day many of the pharmaceutical companies are legally having permission to produce very cheap generic versions of medications. The antipsychotic medications will not effectively work out in psychotic patients.

It is seen that while using atypical antipsychotics like olanzapine, the weight is gained more than using typical antipsychotics medications. One of the more serious side effects produced is tardive dyskinesia. A patient who is suffering from this may show symptoms like repetitive movements of lips or face or legs. These are caused while using the older typical psychotic drugs. With the use of the newer version (second generation), this defect can be reduced to a lesser amount. So by properly making use typical antipsychotic medication lists, we can greatly reduce the risk factor to a high degree.
